What to Expect When Getting Cosmetic Surgery in Bali: A Complete Patient Guide
Published 6 April 2026 by Enzo
Getting cosmetic surgery in Bali involves more planning than a typical holiday. This guide walks through the entire patient journey, from your first enquiry to flying home after recovery.
Step 1: Research and Shortlist (4 to 8 Weeks Before)
Start by browsing our clinic directory. Shortlist 2 to 3 clinics based on the procedure you want, surgeon credentials, and patient reviews. Read the reviews carefully, paying attention to international patients who had similar procedures.
Reach out to your shortlisted clinics via WhatsApp or email. Most Bali clinics respond within 24 to 48 hours. Send clear photos as requested and describe your goals. Ask about the surgeon who would perform your procedure, not just the clinic's general services.
Step 2: Virtual Consultation (3 to 6 Weeks Before)
Most clinics offer a video consultation where the surgeon reviews your photos, discusses your goals, and provides a preliminary assessment and quote. This is not a commitment, but it gives you enough information to decide which clinic to visit in person.
During this consultation, ask about:
- The specific surgeon who will operate
- What the quote includes (and what it does not)
- Expected recovery timeline for your procedure
- Whether they recommend any pre-operative tests
Step 3: Book Flights and Accommodation
Plan your stay based on your procedure:
- Minor procedures (blepharoplasty, small liposuction): 10 to 14 days
- Moderate procedures (rhinoplasty, breast augmentation): 14 to 18 days
- Major procedures (facelift, tummy tuck, mommy makeover): 18 to 21 days
- Hair transplant: 7 to 10 days
Book accommodation near your clinic. For BIMC CosMedic Centre, stay in Nusa Dua or Jimbaran. For clinics in Denpasar (NgoerahSun, DAPS NMW, Dahayu), consider Sanur for its quiet, recovery-friendly environment. For Kuta-based clinics (NuLook, SaRa), Seminyak offers a calmer alternative to central Kuta.
Step 4: In-Person Consultation (Day 1 to 2)
Your first day in Bali should be dedicated to the in-person consultation. The surgeon will examine you, finalise the surgical plan, and confirm the quote. This is your opportunity to ask any remaining questions and to see the facility.
Do not feel pressured to proceed if anything feels wrong. A reputable clinic will give you time to decide.
Step 5: Surgery Day
Follow your surgeon's pre-operative instructions carefully: typically no food or drink for 6 to 8 hours before general anaesthesia, no alcohol for at least 48 hours, and no blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen) for 7 to 10 days prior.
Most procedures take 1 to 4 hours. You will either be discharged the same day (minor procedures) or stay overnight at the hospital or clinic.
Step 6: Recovery in Bali
The first 3 to 5 days are the most critical. Stay close to your accommodation, rest, and follow wound care instructions exactly. Most clinics provide a direct WhatsApp line to the medical team for questions during recovery.
Expect follow-up visits at the clinic on days 3, 7, and sometimes day 10. These are included in most surgical packages. Light walking is encouraged from day 2. Avoid sun exposure on healing areas, swimming, and strenuous activity for the duration your surgeon specifies.
Step 7: Flying Home
Before your departure, schedule a final check-up. Your surgeon will assess healing, remove sutures or splints if applicable, and provide written aftercare instructions for you to share with your doctor at home.
For the flight: wear loose, comfortable clothing, stay hydrated, and move regularly to reduce swelling. Bring a travel pillow and any prescribed medications in your carry-on.
What to Pack
- Button-up or zip-front tops (avoid pullovers after facial or breast surgery)
- Compression garments if advised by your surgeon
- SPF 50+ sunscreen for healed areas
- Travel pillow for the flight home
- Copies of medical records, allergies, and current medications
- Entertainment for recovery days (books, tablet, downloaded shows)
