Is Cosmetic Surgery in Bali Safe? What You Need to Know Before Booking
Published 6 April 2026 by Enzo
Every year, thousands of patients travel to Bali for cosmetic surgery. The savings compared to Australia, Singapore, or Europe can be substantial. But the first question every patient asks is the same: is it safe?
The short answer is yes, when you choose carefully. The longer answer requires understanding how plastic surgery is regulated in Indonesia, what credentials to look for, and which clinics operate at international standards.
How Plastic Surgery Is Regulated in Indonesia
All plastic surgeons in Indonesia must hold SpBP (Spesialis Bedah Plastik) certification, which requires completing a full plastic surgery residency program after medical school. The higher credential, SpBP-RE, indicates additional subspecialty training in reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. Both are regulated by the Indonesian Medical Council (KKI).
Among the 16 clinics in our directory, several surgeons hold advanced credentials. NgoerahSun WAC is home to Dr. Agus Roy Rusly H. H. (SpBP-RE Sub Sp. T(K), FICS), a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons with subspecialty training in tumour surgery. Beyoutiful by Dr. Tompi lists Dr. Ratna Rayeni Natasha (Sp.B.P.R.E, Subsp.K.M.(K)), a reconstructive and aesthetic specialist with a microsurgery subspecialty.
Hospital-Based vs Standalone Clinics
One of the strongest safety indicators is whether a clinic operates within or alongside an accredited hospital. Hospital-based clinics have access to emergency facilities, anaesthesiologists, and intensive care units if needed.
BIMC CosMedic Centre operates within BIMC Hospital in Nusa Dua, a well-known private hospital serving the southern Bali corridor. Dahayu Plastic Surgery is located on the fourth floor of RSIA Puri Bunda Hospital in Denpasar. NgoerahSun WAC is connected to RSUP Ngoerah (formerly Sanglah), a major government-backed hospital with a full range of medical specialists on staff.
Standalone clinics can also deliver excellent results, but you should ask specifically about their surgical facilities, anaesthesia protocols, and emergency procedures before booking.
What to Look For in a Safe Clinic
Based on our review of 16 clinics across Bali, here are the key safety indicators:
- Named surgeons with verifiable SpBP or SpBP-RE credentials listed publicly on their website or profiles
- Hospital-based or hospital-adjacent operating facilities with proper anaesthesia and recovery infrastructure
- Established track record with international patients, indicated by English-language Google reviews from verified patients
- Transparent consultation process including in-person assessment before any procedure is scheduled
- Post-operative follow-up protocols including recovery monitoring, medication, and communication channels after discharge
Common Risks to Understand
Cosmetic surgery carries inherent risks anywhere in the world. In Bali, the additional considerations include:
- Continuity of care: If a complication arises after you return home, follow-up visits require another trip or finding a local surgeon willing to manage another surgeon's work
- Credential verification: Not all clinics publicly list their surgeons' full qualifications. Always ask directly
- Recovery environment: Bali's tropical climate means higher infection risk during the healing period. Follow wound care instructions carefully
- Price-driven decisions: Choosing a surgeon based solely on the lowest price is the single biggest risk factor in medical tourism
Red Flags to Avoid
- Clinics that will not name the operating surgeon before you commit
- No in-person consultation offered before scheduling surgery
- Pressure to book immediately or during a "promotion"
- Surgeons who cannot provide their SpBP registration details
- Facilities without proper surgical theatre equipment (ask for photos or a tour)
The Bottom Line
Bali has qualified plastic surgeons working in modern facilities. The key is doing your research before you arrive. Start with our clinic directory, check surgeon credentials, read recent patient reviews, and always schedule a consultation before committing to any procedure.
